I still remember the first week of March when I got that message from the office where I worked. It would have closed as a precaution due to Covid-19. The pandemic had not yet exploded but this country quickly stopped. I thought I can’t leave the house, but the F1 2020 season is about to begin!

When the Melbourne weekend arrived I was looking forward to seeing the race, but soon the first news arrived. Mclaren members, contagion in the paddock. Until the end, we thought they could race but then… everything stopped.

It is said that even from bad times, opportunities can be recognized. That changes should not necessarily scare, but often for the human being, they seem a threat, a misfortune, more than teaching, or perhaps an invitation to reflect.

It’s actually a convenient summary of what’s happened in Formula one this year. We’ve gone from the potential disaster of no races, which could have
forced a number of teams out of business altogether to a rammed
calendar packed with races and venues that fans could have only dreamed of 12 months ago.

As more of this year’s schedule has fallen into place, F1 has silenced any talk that the 2020 championship may not be as worthy as any previous.
In fact, it’s moved into territory where actually there is a mounting argument that winning this year’s crown will be more impressive than a regular campaign.

We’ll even put forward the case that when we come to look back to the 2020 campaign, providing it’s not wrecked by a second wave of the pandemic, wear a ask people! that it will be viewed as a golden yar when f1 stepped away from the norm and produced something special.

On the one hand, we have the extreme circumstances of teams having to live through unprecedented times of lockdowns extended factory shutdowns, car freezes, triple headers, regular testing, and social distancing requirements. this is an f1 like nothing experienced before. and it’s not just team personnel who are being pushed to the extremes and potential breaking point by the intensity of the campaign.
We’ve already seen with Lando Norris in Austria, that drivers are having their own niggles too.

Not to mention Sergio Perez catching coronavirus, and having to sit out the last two races. Where this year campaign has the potential to really stand out for fans though, is the calendar. With F1 picking something old, something new, something borrowed and something okay maybe not blue. in a bid to get enough races on the schedule, venues like Imola and Mugello, will provide a treat for fans, and perhaps a real opportunity for the championship to understand what shape it needs to take in the future like many sporting contests.

F1 is too often affected by people viewing it’s past better than the present.
Whether it’s no overtaking, or too much overtaking through DRS. The same teams winning all the time, or too many teams winning making it a lottery. Time and again section of his audience have always found a reason to complain about the here and the now. The recurring theme being “it was always better back then”. But thinking the past was only great overlooks the fact that as humans, we only seem to recall the highlights.

Talk to anyone now about the Ayrton Senna versus Alain Prost domination in the 1980s. Or the Schumacher glory years with Ferrari in the 2000s. And all you’ll hear is how great they were and what a thrill F1 was to witness in those moments.
What’s got lost in the mists of time, is the amid all the spectacular moments. and the record-breaking achievements which were all pretty great by the way, there were also some pretty boring races that were no more exciting than some of the dull races we have on occasion these days.

The delta moments though have been wiped from our memory banks. This love affair with the past is why there has been excitement about the return of tracks like Imola and the Nurburgring. And intrigue about venues like Mugello and The Algarve that hosted f1 tests in the past but were never able to get the funding together, to be able to hold a Grand Prix in normal times.

Will these venues live up the hype generated by their most famous moments?
What will be fascinating to see, how each of F1’s different types of venues play out in terms of spectacle.
We have an old school track in Imola. And High-speed challenging venue in Mugello. A modern undulating medium speed circuit in the Algarve. A potentially a super fast tri-oval in Bahrain, and finally, a come-back to the Istanbul Park for the Turkish Grand Prix! that should all deliver something unique.

With F1 having been lambasted in the past for all it’s tracks looking identical, with the same type of slow-speed corners leading to the same type of slow chicanes, with the same type of features, the variety on offer this year should hopefully a catalyst for mixing it up. It is also hugely refreshing that the F1 schedule isn’t just a cut and paste of the previous seasons. So teams will face greater uncertainty about setups a tactic for venues that aren’t on a regular beat. Spain in August anyone?

Having an identical calendar year in and year out can be a bit just too repetitive.
For too long F1’s key motivating factor in picking where it races was just how many dollars governments were willing to pay out for the privilege of hosting a race.
The quality of the action and the spectacle on offer to fans was only a secondary consideration. Now the coronavirus crisis which has derailed F1’s finances by not allowing fans into races has offered the opportunity to pick tracks for the right reasons.

Thankfully that opportunity wasn’t let go. By the end of this year (especially when thrown in with the Imola two-day race weekend format experiment) F1 should have an incredible data set about the type of venues that the series needs in the future, with or without a pandemic to deal with.

Were the old-school tracks just better?
Was Mugello better than a crazy Bahrain oval?
Would the Algarve be better on the calendar than another race in Europe?
Is the classic Istanbul park circuit prove something we already knew?

F1 2020 schedule is certainly a calendar for the ages. It’s a brilliant pick of the past, the present, and the unknown. So let’s enjoy in the moment and reveal what we’ve got right now, and not when we’re sitting there with our rose-tinted spectacles in 10 years’ time.

It’s race weekend again finally and we’re heading for Round 7 for this F1 2015 season in Montreal Canada on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. “Bienvenue au Quebec” says the wall of champions. This is a historic circuit, that always has shown great races, also because of the crazy weather changes.

Similarly to Melbourne’s Albert Park, the race takes place through a public park, with cars darting through the trees on public roads and parts of a purpose-built race track.

The circuit has hardly changed since its introduction to the calendar, with the move to new pit buildings for the 1988 grand Prix the only major change. No wonder too: the track’s layout has leaned itself to lots of overtaking over the years and plenty of enthralling, chaotic racing.

Two of the best overtaking spots on the circuit are the L’Engle hairpin at turn 10 and the final chicane at turns 12 and 13 at the end of the back straight. However, also look out for action in the opening complex of corners along with turns six and eight as the track twists through the park.

Ideally, for these types of a corner a high-downforce setup is required to aid stability under braking – the track tests brakes to their limits – and for traction on the corner exit. However, a back straight of over 1km means that set-up is a delicate balancing act.

One famous feature on the circuit is the ‘Wall of Champions’. Exiting the final chicane onto the pit straight, a wall runs tight to the track which has ended many drivers’ – and champions’ – races over the years. In 1999, three world champions, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill, and Jacques Villeneuve all crashed out at the corner.

Hello, Maniacs! Here we are, ready to attend the most glamour GP of the entire F1 season. The Montecarlo or The Monaco Grand Prix. The most famous street circuit, with luxuries boats glamour parties. A race out of time and out of place on the modern F1 calendar. A Grand Prix that survives simply because no-one can imagine Formula One without it.

Red Bull Simulator, F1 simulator, Montecarlo track, Monaco track, RfactorIt’s the shortest track of the calendar and the slowest too. It will be the first time of this season for the Pirelli supersoft tires. he building of the circuit takes six weeks, and the dismantling after the race another three weeks. The race circuit has many elevation shifts, tight corners, and is narrow. Making it perhaps the most demanding track in Formula One. Due to the tight and twisty nature of the circuit, it shows the skill of the drivers over the power of the cars. However, there is very little overtaking as the course is so narrow and dangerous.

Monaco’s street circuit places very different demands on the cars in comparison to the majority of the other circuits used during a Championship season. The cars are set up with high downforce configuration, not just to have high speed in those corners but mainly to give the cars the right balance and stability during brakes. Brake wear is not a problem during a race in Monaco. Instead, the low speeds mean the issue is keeping the brakes up to working temperature. The only heavy braking points are at the chicane after the tunnel, which often is seen as the only opportunity to overtake.

The name of the corners has now become very popular in the F1 Fans community such as Saint Devote, la Virage du Casino, Mirabeau, the slow Old Station, the Tobaccos, the Rascasse. Hello Maniacs ! After three weeks with no Formula 1 here we go. Here we are in the middle of the race week, where on next sunday there will be the 5th GP of the F1 2015 season in Barcelona Catalunya at the Montimelo’ circuit. The drivers know very very well this circuit cause it’s one of the track used in the winter testing every year and it has all the various type of corner that tryes and cars are gonna challenge during the year. So it’s the one of the most complete circuit.

Barcelona, Catalunya, Montimelò, track f1 2015 rfactorThe wind direction at the circuit can change drastically during the day, a significant factor given the importance of aerodynamics to modern Formula One cars. It is then hard to find a good setup since cars can have massive aerodynamic drag and understeer on one part of the circuit in the morning, but suffer oversteer at the same part of the circuit in the afternoon. Pirelli choice compound will be as the same as the 2014 season and so: Medium and Hard. One DRS zone on the main straight which is the longest main straight of the season. High downforce configuration is required.

Modifications have been made to the original layout on several occasions. Then in 2007 another alteration was made to improve safety, with a chicane inserted between the two high-speed corners at the end of the lap. Not time for rest maniacs! Two races in a row, and we love it! uh?  Just finished in Shangai for the Chinese GP, if you missed my post you can find it here, and already heading in the desert, for the 4th race of the calendar, at the Bahrain Sakhir International Circuit, for this F1 2015 season.

F1 2015 Bahrain sakhir international circuitThe Bahrain Sakhir International Circuit is a fast race track, big facility in the middle of the sand in the Middle East. The circuit cost approximately US$150 million to construct. It has six separate tracks, including a test oval and a drag strip. In 2011 was the first race of the F1 season. It’s another Tilk layout design as Sepang and some others. Positioned in the middle of a desert, there were worries that sand would blow onto the circuit and disrupt the race. However, organizers were able to keep the sand off the track by spraying an adhesive on the sand around the track.

Two DRS zones, one on the main straight, the other on the back straight after the infamous turn 10.  Turn 1 is the hardest braking zone of the track, must brake approximately 100 metres before the corner and shift right down to 2nd, very tight and a possible spot for overtaking. Be careful with the throttle for traction and upshift to turn 2 and 3. Turns 9 and 10 are very challenging as they are two blind left-handers where cars must brake, downshift and turn all at the same time, trying to avoid locking up their inside front tyres.

The weather it’s hot very hot but dry, not humid like Malaysia. But since last year the race has been scheduled into a night race, the temperatures dropdown. I was driving the F1 Simulator already from Sunday night, and I have to be honest I had some issues adapting to this track. It’s not an easy one. You need to be really precise with the brakes, need to get a fast exit and don’t lose traction. Hello SimManiacs how are you doing?  Hope everything it’s fine for you. Today I want to talk to you about rFactor Simulator. rFactor is a racing simulator created by Isi in 2007. Yes, in 2007! but still used nowadays by racing teams, in our case we talk about F1 Teams, such as Red Bull Racing, Williams F1, Sauber F1. Many pages have been written about this simulator, I call it simulator because it’s pretty different from a videogame. I personally love it. I have installed different mods, such as GT3, Formula Renault, BMW Z4, Formula 4, but mainly I use it with F1, and after seen many videos from the drivers using it for training, I started to collect all the tracks they were using on their videos and using them on my videos too. I know what you’re thinking: this is a proper maniac work!  Talking about rfactor it has been created to be the best simulator in the market. Created with the possibility to reproduce any kind of vehicle, for this, includes complex simulation models of the tires and aerodynamics and a physics engine with 15 degrees of freedom.

rfactor, f1 simulator, drivers, training, Thanks to this architecture of the software, teams are able to collect and put a lot of data from their test, to simulate the real behavior of the car on the tracks with different tires, setups, and also test in the simulator the new parts available for their aero packages for the next race. Young drivers are hired from the F1 Teams to run lap after lap after lap on the sim testing, and sending back live to the pit wall, during race weekends, new data for setup changes during the pitstops. As you can understand the use of the simulator not only cut the expensive costs of tests, such as travel costs, rent of the track, and the risk of having damages but also make it easier and quicker, with no risk to hit walls or any other mistake that will affect the budget or any risk of injury for the driver. As Mark Webber once said talking about the simulator:”on the simulator is always sunny”. I have an rfactor rig at home, for sure not the same that drivers use on their team’s headquarters, but is very very challenging to get pace, change setups and improve lap times as real drivers do. You need to focus turn the lights off and go. Don’t forget that some details make the difference. When the drivers are training their brain must be “tricked” by the rig so;

  1. 180 degrees screen in which the driver’s eyes are completely absorbed in the virtual world.
  2. Full-size Cockpit, steering wheels, the pedals tuned to the same weight they have in the real car.
  3. Last but not least to complete the illusion they have a moving platform in which the axis follows the input of the car: acceleration, turn, brake.
